-‘Breathing Jeju, Protect It Together’ Campaign

The JNU RISE Project Group conducted a citizen campaign titled “Breathing Jeju, Protect It Together!”. This initiative aimed to address Jeju’s climate crisis through practical daily-life actions, in collaboration with the local community and with the support of the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province.

The campaign was promoted as a regional problem-solving initiative under the Jeju National University RISE project, which seeks to connect JNU’s educational and research capabilities with the resolution of regional issues. It also aimed to foster public consensus on responding to the climate crisis through hands-on activities jointly undertaken by students and citizens.

The campaign was held a total of seven times between August 23 and December 13 at major coastal areas across Jeju, including Iho Tewoo Beach, Jungmun Saekdal Beach, Gwakji Beach, Hyeopjae Beach, Hamdeok Beach, Samyang Beach, and Pyoseon Beach. Each session involved three to eleven participants, including local residents and university members. Over the course of the campaign, participants walked more than 35 kilometers of coastline and collected approximately 31 kilograms of marine and coastal waste.

In addition to plogging activities, known locally as Ssdam, the campaign included interviews with Jeju residents. Through these activities, participants raised awareness about the urgency of responding to the climate crisis and the importance of achieving carbon neutrality. Participating citizens provided positive feedback, with one participant stating, “It was more enjoyable and meaningful than expected.”
