Prof. Ko Kwan Pyo and his research team claim Jeju underground water effective against diabetes

Jeju's underground water may be anti-diabetic, according to the latest study announced at the JNU Hospital.

Professor Ko Kwan Pyo and his co-workers of the JNU School of Medicine reported that Jeju water has a therapeutic effect against diabetes.

Prof. Ko's study appeared in a recent issue of the international Journal "Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine".

The research team tested Jeju water by comparing with Seoul tap water for its effect on the blood sugar level of 233 diabetic patients over the period of September 2010 through April 2012.

Results showed that there was no difference in blood sugar level between Seoul and two Jeju sampling site waters, but the water sampled from Daepodong/Seogwipo was more effective (87%) in controlling blood sugar level than the Seoul water (79%).

Other factors also suggested that Jeju water was more effective than Seoul water, and the researchers speculated that vanadium ion present in Jeju's volcanic rock bed water (including "Samdasoo," popular bottled water marketed throughout the country) contributes to the anti-diabetic activity.

The authors pointed out that more work is needed to firm up the preliminary results.
