JNU announced that the research results, led by Prof. Jeon Soo-min of the JNU Department of Pharmacy, were published in the latest issue of "JAMA Network Open (Impact Factor=13.38, within the top 10% of JCR)," an international academic journal of the American Medical Association.

With the topic, ‘Psychiatric Comorbidities and Schizophrenia in Youths with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder’, a large-scale cohort study using claims data from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service quantitatively revealed the impact of psychiatric comorbidities on the development of schizophrenia in children and adolescent ADHD patients.

According to the results of the study, it was confirmed that children and adolescents with ADHD aged 5-19 have a 2.14 times higher risk of developing schizophrenia in the future than those who do not. In addition, in the case of developing schizophrenia in patients who do not have psychiatric diseases other than ADHD, about 73.8% of patients experienced psychiatric diseases before the diagnosis of schizophrenia, and the progression pattern of psychiatric diseases in these patients was confirmed.

Prof. Jeon said, "In the face of growing social interest in the management of psychiatric diseases, the results of this study are meaningful in emphasizing that the risk of schizophrenia can be reduced by carefully monitoring psychiatric comorbidities in ADHD patients, which usually appear in children and adolescents. “

Currently, Jeon is conducting the "Creative Challenge Research Project" by the Ministry of Education and the Korea Research Foundation on the topic of drug and suicide risks. Since her appointment to JNU in March 2023, Jeon has published two papers in the Journal of Medical Internet Research (IF 7.4, top 2.4 percent of the JCR rankings) and European Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (IF 7.6, top 5 percent of the JCR rankings).
