JNU has been chosen as a ‘Key University for Intellectual Property Professional Human Resources Development’ to train intellectual property professionals and spread intellectual property education by linking national strategic technology with local major industries.
The Korea Intellectual Property Office and the Korea Invention Promotion Association recently selected JNU as the Jeju region's project organization for the ‘2024 Intellectual Property Professional Human Resources Development Key University (IPU)’. As an IPU, JNU will invest KRW 7.3 billion for a total of 10 years (5+5) from 2024 to 2033, which establish and operate a regional specialized intellectual property professional training system in Jeju.
IPU supported by the Korean Intellectual Property Office is the project to cultivate specialized intellectual property professionals in each field that will drive the sustainable growth of local innovative companies and to spread intellectual property education to other universities, institutions, companies, and high schools.
JNU will set up an intellectual property professional training project group (Director Kim In-jung, Prof. of Biotechnology), establish an intellectual property convergence major for completing multiple degrees in the undergraduate department, and an intellectual property convergence department (tentative name) for master's and doctoral courses in the graduate school to create a system for training intellectual property professionals.
In addition, through organic cooperation with the Jeju Regional Innovation Platform (RIS), Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, Jeju Provincial Office of Education, and Jeju Business Association, JNU plans to maximize the results of the project and establish a sustainable intellectual property education system. Through this, JNU is going to contribute to innovation in the strategic industry in Jeju by spreading intellectual property education not only to elementary, middle and high schools but also to universities located in Jeju. Furthermore, it plans to make efforts to create an intellectual property ecosystem in Jeju by promoting various activities to spread intellectual property education to universities, institutions, companies, and high schools in the region.
Prof. Kim In-jung said, "JNU will cultivate balanced IP professionals focusing on creating and utilizing IP based on technological innovation through the IPU project," adding, "JNU will become a central university that creates value through innovation in training IP professionals in response to future industries."
