"2024 1st Regular Meeting" of Korea NU10 Presidents' Council (Chair Kim Eel-hwan, JNU President) was held at Grand Hyatt Jeju on Feb. 2.

Korea NU 10 presidents discussed ‘Joint Response Plan for Fostering Public & Essential Medical Personnel’ at the meeting hosted by JNU.

In a situation where medical resources are significantly concentrated in the metropolitan areas, graduates aspiring to become interns at a university hospital where they graduated face structural irrationality. It creates a phenomenon of leaning toward doctors in the metropolitan area because the number of interns and majors (TO) compared to the high number of medical school graduates. Moreover, entering medical schools even in medical undeserved areas becomes tough due to regional talent selection based on geographic location.

Accordingly, the council proposed plans such as △ increase the number of interns and residents in local base national hospitals, △ introduce a regional fee system (increase in the number of medical personnel in underprivileged areas, etc.), △ strengthen public and essential medical curriculum, etc.

In addition, the council agreed to request the lifting of the limit on the number of bank accounts as consensus was formed on the situation where it was difficult for universities to manage funds for interest income. This is because the budget for the national university promotion project is limited to one main account. If the project cost is operated through short-term deposit deposits, the expected annual interest income is estimated to be about KRW 200 million.

Korea NU 10 Presidents' Council is a consultative body composed of the presidents of 10 national universities in Korea. The members include Kangwon National University, Kyungpook National University, Gyeongsang National University, Busan National University, Seoul National University, Chonnam National University, Jeonbuk National University, Jeju National University (Presidential University), Chungnam National University, and Chungbuk National University. The purpose of Korea NU 10 is to strengthen cooperation between national universities and contribute to higher education and national development.
