JNU has thrown its hat into the ring for the "Glocal University 30 Project," as announced by the Ministry of Education in February, marking its second attempt after participating in 2023.

The "Glocal University 30 Project" is a significant financial support project that evaluates universities' innovative strategies in collaboration with their local communities. It aims to select 30 universities by 2026 and provide a total of KRW 100 billion in funding over five years. 10 universities were chosen in 2023, and around 10 universities can be selected in 2024. This project not only offers substantial financial assistance but also holds considerable influence on universities' branding. Consequently, for universities outside the capital region, attracting participation in this project is essential for their future prospects.

JNU has implemented a comprehensive reform to break down the boundaries between internal and external university components linked with the local community. In response to diversified societal demands and to ensure students' diverse educational choices, JNU has established a liberal arts college, expanded student recruitment units, eliminated departments, and introduced comprehensive changes in educational programs, including the implementation of track systems and the establishment of global autonomous major programs. Furthermore, in order to cultivate tailored talent for local industries, JNU has implemented daring educational innovations such as integrating academic structures and curricula. Additionally, JNU has announced plans to propose innovative strategies for regional, industrial, and educational integration in collaboration with strategic industries in Jeju to foster the creation of new local specialties.

JNU has reaffirmed its commitment to securing the Global University 30 Project this year, aiming to preserve its status as a national flagship university in Jeju and fulfill its role as a leading national university in regional development.

JNU President Kim Eel-hwan said, "Securing the Global University 30 Project will provide an opportunity for JNU and Jeju Special Self-Governing Province to advance despite the challenging industrial environment compared to other regions," adding that, "JNU is committed to fostering local talent in Jeju to pursue their dreams freely and to develop JNU into a glocal university that attracts students from all over the world."
