JNU announced that Lee Kyung-tae, a Ph.D. student (supervisor Kim Myung-suk) at the Plant Molecular System of Biology Research Institute, was selected for the ‘First Graduate Presidential Science Scholarship.’
The Scholarship program is newly established to find and support excellent graduate students who could become top scientists or engineers. The program is supported by the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning. It has been run by the Korea Scholarship Foundation. This year, there were 2,980 applicants, and despite a tough competition rate of about 25 to 1, Lee was selected. He will receive a scholarship of KRW 2 million per month for four years, totaling KRW 24 million annually, up to KRW 96 million for a maximum of eight semesters.
Lee was chosen for the scholarship in recognition of his excellent research capabilities and growth potential in the field of basic life under the research topic of ‘Exploring marine biodiversity and the barren ground phenomenon according to climate change’. Currently, he has been conducting research on alveopora japonica algae which is closely related to the barren ground phenomenon in the plant molecular system research lab. In the future, he is expected to contribute to identifying the diversity and ecological role of alveopora japonica algae, preparing measures to respond to changes in the marine ecosystem on the Korean Peninsula caused by climate change.
