Energy Engineering major at JNU Electrical Energy Engineering Department have been selected for the '2024 Nuclear Safety Pre-Training Program Reinforcement Project' supported by the Korea Nuclear Safety Foundation.
JNU Energy Engineering major secured this project based on its long-standing excellence in education and research capabilities in this field through competing against large universities in Seoul and Gyeonggi area. With a subsidy of KRW 1.6 billion over eight years, the program aims to train nuclear safety experts and ensure local community safety from nuclear and radioactive hazards."
In 1983, JNU established the Department of Radiation Engineering, which has evolved into the Department of Electrical Energy Engineering, incorporating the Department of Energy Engineering. The energy engineering major is focusing on nuclear power, training talents in the non-carbon energy field and the radiation field used in defense and various industries to cope with global warming.
In particular, the JNU Institute of Nuclear Science & Technology became the first university-affiliated institution in Korea to be recognized as an 'Internationally Accredited Testing Agency' in the field of radiation measurement by KOLAS in 2022. The institute greatly contributes to alleviating social concerns regarding marine products in Jeju following the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear accident through the operation of a radiation measuring station in Jeju and through active communication with the local community.
Head of the project, Prof. Kang Jae-hyuk, expressed his vision, saying, "JNU will make more efforts to cultivate talents through this project so that Jeju can serve as a bridgehead for nuclear safety."
