“Arboretum Diagnosis Center” contemplated for Jeju
나무 전문진료 및 연구기관 제주에만 없어 Jeju without forest diagnosis and research center
The Jeju National University (Song Seok-Eon, President) College of Life and Natural Resource Science Faculty of Bioindustry (Kim Dong Soon, Dean) has disclosed Tuesday (July 31, 2020) that a Forest Service Arboretum Diagnosis Center is being contemplated for Jeju.
The regional arboretum center conducts diagnostic survey of the forest and training of forest service professionals. Currently no such center exists in Jeju, although all other national flagship universities operate the forest service centers.
Previous attempts to locate such a center in Jeju have been unsuccessful. A new application has been filed with the National Forest Service last June.
Jeju Island is essentially a major forest zone centered around the Mt Halla. Recently, the forest has been observed with wide spread infections such as pine wilt (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus), Witche’s broom and Greensickness (Chlorosis). The situation calls for a need to have an arboretum diagnosis service center in Jeju. The JNU plant resource and environment program (headed by Professor Kim Dong Soon) is planning to open a course in arboretum pathogenesis and laboratory practice.
