제주대-생기원, 지역 자원 재순환 사업 추진 Used coffee grounds recycled

 

The used coffee grounds produced in Jeju region have been registered as organic farming materials.

 

Jeju National University Life Science and Technology Center (Kim Sae Je, Director) and Korea Institute of Production Technology Jeju Branch (Kim Ho Sung, Director) jointly conduct the community business invigoration project for Jeju’s economic development since 2019.

 

The project has been supported by Jeju Autonomous Government and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

 

The coffee grounds recycling got the attention of these government sponsors.

 

Over 1000 coffee serving employees/stores and other food stores including bakeries produce a substantial used coffee grounds annually.

 

The JNU Center and Korea Production Technology Institute have developed the manufacturing of organic farming materials in cooperation with Starbucks who supplied bulk of the used coffee grounds for the project.

 

Safety testing and on-site farming tests indicated that the materials were safe and useful as organic farming fertilizers.
