Conference commemorating birthday of Former President Hyun

The Jeju Vernacular Studies Institute (Kang Young Bong, President) holds an academic conference in the JNU Ara Conventional Hall in commemoration of Former Present Hyun Pyung Hyo’s centennial birthday tomorrow (14:00, August 5, 2020).

The theme of the conference “Reminiscing Yeonam Hyun Pyung Hyo” depicts President Hyun’s lifelong (1920~2004) study of Jeju vernacular.

The conference program consists of the following sessions:

Session 1: Life of Yeonam Hyun (Kang Young Bong), Recollections of Yeonam (Kim Byung Taek) and Yeonam’s life; Reminiscing my father (Hyun Chun Wook)

Session 2: Yeonam’s academic achievement (Chung Seung Cheol),

Session 3: Grammas (Kang Jung Hee), vocabulary (Kim Soo Ja). Kim Mi Jin, Kim Sung Ryong, and Moon Duk Chan are scheduled to provide after-session discussion.

Former President Hyun has been widely recognized for his lifetime studies in Jeju’s indigenous language and has left seminal books to his credit. He served as the 5^th president of the Jeju University when it gained the national university status in 1982 and served as its first president.

The Jeju vernacular foundation plans to publish a commemorative conference proceeding entitled “Looking Back in Time.
