“Jeju black cattle gets brandmark” for industrialization, Prof. Park says

Professor Park Se Pil, Director of the Agriculture and Food Fusion Innovative Personnel Development Project: Animal Products High Quality Production and Management Technology Development Research Center disclosed at a press conference last Wednesday (October 29, 2020) that the question about the authenticity of Jeju black cattle has been resolved.

Accordingly, the animal product quality evaluation agency gave a go-ahead sign to Dr. Park to include a “Jeju Black Cattle” brandmark since last September.

With the brandmark, cattle breeders and distribution partners will be able to refer to the information relevant to the “Jeju black cattle” label.

However, disputes about the authenticity of the Jeju black cattle are expected to dispel in brand identity and grading standards when selling and buying the animals and their products.

With the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food and its technological evaluation agency, the Jeju cattle has finally been authenticated based on genetic characterization and meat quality analysis conducted at the JNU Jeju black cattle research institute, and it is now possible to formally label the animal and its products as being of the Jeju black cattle breed.

Without the formal authentication, the term “Jeju Black Cattle” and its meat grading had been lost during distribution of the animals and their meat products, transporting them merely identified with a term such as “Korean cattle” or “beef cattle.”

Professor Park said that he was pleased with the establishment of the authenticity of Jeju black cattle for the first time in 82 years since the cattle were excluded from authentication during Japanese occupation. As the result of the brand authenticity, he expected the consumption of Jeju black cattle would rise in the cattle market.
