The work of Prof. Chung Ju-hee from the Faculty of Music at JNU has been chosen for the '2024 New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival (NYCEMF 2024)', held in New York, USA.
Founded in 2009, the NYCEMF is the largest of its kind in New York, dedicated to showcasing innovative electronic and acoustic music from around the globe. Each year, works are selected by a panel of internationally renowned composers and musicians.
Among losts of submissions worldwide, Professor Chung's 'Heterotopia VI' was selected for this year's festival with other 200 works. This piece integrates graphic images that respond to electronic sounds and premiered at JNU last year. The performance took place at a local venue in New york on June 20 during the festival.
Discussing her work, Chung said, "In exploring the concept of heterotopia, first introduced by Michel Foucault, I aimed to address the question 'Does utopia exist in reality?' If utopia represents an ideal and perfect imaginary space, heterotopia can be seen as a utopian place manifesting within reality.“
Prof. Chung plans to present her upcoming work, 'Heterotopia VII', at the JCC Art Center in Seoul in July 2024.
